ArabNet Team, Oct 02 2017

Seedstars World, the global seed-stage startup competition for emerging markets and fast-growing startup scenes brought its Egyptian round to a successful close during Seedstars Alexandria. The event, which was hosted as part of Techne Summit, took place this Saturday at Bibliotheca Alexandrina, and 9 selected startups were invited to present their ideas in front of the local jury panel. The event attracted interest from over 150 startups and had over 120 event participants, and was supported by regional partners, Orange, Microsoft4Afrika, ENEL, and MERCK.

The local winner, WideBot, the first bot builder platform in the MENA region, which allows users to build their own intelligent chatbot without any coding or technical experience in just 10 minutes, was selected the best startup in Egypt for its innovative solution. Mermaid Egypt, a platform to connect professional trusted cleaners to homeowners, came second, and InterAct, with its product Touchizer, a device that converts any ordinary surface to be interactive, grabbed the last spot in the top 3.

As a part of the prize, WideBot will be participating at the Seedstars Summit, taking place in Switzerland in April 2018, a weeklong training program with the opportunity to meet the other 80 winners, as well as investors and mentors from around the world. Traditionally, the final day of the Summit will be dedicated to pitching in front of an audience of 1000 attendees, with the possibility of winning up to $1M in equity investment and prizes.

Earlier this year, WideBot had participated in ArabNet Startup Battle – Cairo Edition, and won first place. Further to their victory, WideBot earned the chance to compete against other startups in ArabNet’s Startup Championship in Dubai. Out of 18 startups, 5 were selected to pitch to a panel of professionals and leaders in the tech and digital industry; WideBot came in third place in the competition and secured with that a spot at FbStart.

The 9 startups pitched in front of a prestigious jury, including Fadi Antaki (A15), Ahmed Said Hegazy (Orange), Wessam El Beih (Drosos Foundation), Willie Elamien (Flat6Labs Cairo), Dr. Ashraf Abdel Wahab (Microsoft 4Afrika) and Kamran Samadli (Seedstars). Moreover, both Paul Garnier, the Swiss Ambassador in Egypt and Kennedy Kithek, Country MD at Seedstars Egypt, were keynote speakers at the event.
